The LORD said to my Lord,

“Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.”

The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked,

and the sceptre of the rulers.

They have heard that I sigh:

there is none to comfort me:

all mine enemies have heard of my trouble;

they are glad that thou hast done it:

thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called,

and they shall be like unto me.

Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods,

and a Lord of kings,

and a revealer of secrets,

seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.

Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed;

I saw,

and behold a tree in the midst of the earth,

and the height thereof was great.

The tree grew,

and was strong,

and the height thereof reached unto heaven,

and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth:

The leaves thereof were fair,

and the fruit thereof much,

and in it was meat for all:

the beasts of the field had shadow under it,

and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was fed of it.

He cried aloud,

and said thus,

Hew down the tree,

and cut off his branches,

shake off his leaves,

and scatter his fruit:

let the beasts get away from under it,

and the fowls from his branches:

Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth,

even with a band of iron and brass,

in the tender grass of the field;

and let it be wet with the dew of heaven,

and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth:

Let his heart be changed from man’s,

and let a beast’s heart be given unto him;

and let seven times pass over him

This matter is by the decree of the watchers,

and the demand by the word of the holy ones:

to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men,

and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and

setteth up over it the basest of men.

And Joseph said unto him,

This is the interpretation of it:

The three branches are three days:

Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head,

and restore thee unto thy place:

and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh’s cup into his hand,

after the former manner when thou wast his butler.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,

saith the LORD,

thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

that before they call,

I will answer;

I will hear.

In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Metacognition is an awareness of one’s thought processes and an understanding of the patterns behind them. The term comes from the root word meta, meaning “beyond”, or “on top of”.[1] Metacognition can take many forms, such as reflecting on one’s ways of thinking and knowing when and how to use particular strategies for problem-solving.[1] There are generally two components of metacognition: (1) knowledge about cognition and (2) regulation of cognition.[2]

Metamemory, defined as knowing about memory and mnemonic strategies, is an especially important form of metacognition.[3] Academic research on metacognitive processing across cultures is in the early stages, but there are indications that further work may provide better outcomes in cross-cultural learning between teachers and students.[4]

Writings on metacognition date back at least as far as two works by the Greek philosopher Aristotle (384–322 BC): On the Soul and the Parva Naturalia.[5]

The concepts of fluid intelligence (gf) and crystallized intelligence (gc) were introduced in 1963 by the psychologist Raymond Cattell.[1][2] According to Cattell’s psychometrically-based theory, general intelligence (g) is subdivided into gf and gc. Fluid intelligence is the ability to solve novel reasoning problems and is correlated with a number of important skills such as comprehension, problem solving, and learning.[3] Crystallized intelligence, on the other hand, involves the ability to deduce secondary relational abstractions by applying previously learned primary relational abstractions.[4]

In the domain of cognitive neuroscience, metacognitive monitoring and control has been viewed as a function of the prefrontal cortex, which receives (monitors) sensory signals from other cortical regions and implements control using feedback loops (see chapters by Schwartz & Bacon and Shimamura, in Dunlosky & Bjork, 2008).[3]

Metacognition is studied in the domain of artificial intelligence and modelling.[12] Therefore, it is the domain of interest of emergent systemics.

The important conscious act of a metastrategic strategy is the “conscious” awareness that one is performing a form of higher order thinking. MSK is an awareness of the type of thinking strategies being used in specific instances and it consists of the following abilities: making generalizations and drawing rules regarding a thinking strategy, naming the thinking strategy, explaining when, why and how such a thinking strategy should be used, when it should not be used, what are the disadvantages of not using appropriate strategies, and what task characteristics call for the use of the strategy.[60]

Second-order cybernetics, also known as the cybernetics of cybernetics, is the recursive application of cybernetics to itself and the reflexive practice of cybernetics according to such a critique. It is cybernetics where “the role of the observer is appreciated and acknowledged rather than disguised, as had become traditional in western science”.[1] Second-order cybernetics was developed between the late 1960s and mid 1970s[note 1] by Heinz von Foerster and others, with key inspiration coming from Margaret Mead. Foerster referred to it as “the control of control and the communication of communication” and differentiated first order cybernetics as “the cybernetics of observed systems” and second-order cybernetics as “the cybernetics of observing systems”.[4] It is closely allied to radical constructivism, which was developed around the same time by Ernst von Glasersfeld.[5] While it is sometimes considered a break from the earlier concerns of cybernetics, there is much continuity with previous work and it can be thought of as a distinct tradition within cybernetics, with origins in issues evident during the Macy conferences in which cybernetics was initially developed.[6][7][8] Its concerns include autonomy, epistemology, ethics, language, self-consistency, self-referentiality, and self-organizing capabilities of complex systems. It has been characterised as cybernetics where “circularity is taken seriously”.[9]
